What is an Illustration Application?

The word application can have several meanings. In the context of illustration, design and art, an application can be defined as a type of visual, which includes various features and characteristics typical of its type of use or purpose. In this context an illustrative application is not referring to software applications used such as adobe illustrator, or an application used in the process for obtaining a job. There are many types of applications, or frameworks, comprising of visual information, including images and sometimes text, for communicating different types of information. For example when we discuss a storyboard as a design application, your illustrator will know the function and form for the job of communicating information in this particular way, using particular methods that are more or less common amongst artists. In the case of a storyboard, for example, your illustrator will know that this type of application will be used as a form of visual display for expressing the idea of a story

The many types of applications used in illustration are just a vehicle for expressing and communicating and idea visually using certain conventional styles, compositions, formats and layouts.

What kinds of Illustration Applications are there?
From storyboards to medical diagrams, from fashion illustrations to concept boards, illustration enhances the transfer of knowledge visually by using stylised graphics.
Illustration can also aid in selling a product or idea through effective visual communication. It is applied to products and elements of various use such as advertising, packaging, TV commercials and even biomedical illustrations for educational and practical uses. Some of the applications of illustration such as a portrait or landscape painting, are seen as aesthetic and creative image making, similar to art. Illustration has increasingly become important in the range of services offered due to its commercial versatility and ability to be manipulated in various ways for selling products. Whilst the terms fine arts and illustration are often used interchangeably, fine arts usually has a more traditional use and is sold alone as a piece, whereas illustration can be adapted for numerous commercial purposes including branding and identity as well as for selling products and merchandise or for advertising. Illustration can include the incorporation of text and other types of visual elements similar to graphic design. Other uses of illustration can be: biomedical and scientific illustration, custom made illustrations such as t-shirts, postcards, invitations and calendars, as well as fashion design and illustration in the media. They can also be used in what is referred to as art illustration, such as portraits, landscapes, and other such traditional means but can be created from a variety of media and techniques, including the modern techniques of digital art making.

medical diagram  Textbooks for subjects such as medicine are designed to present subjects such as human biology and physiology. These publications have layouts which illustrate the different body parts and diagrams. A common example of graphics in use to educate is diagrams of human anatomy. Illustration is applied to make the information more accessible and understandable for students,

especially in such an important field. Illustration is applied in the entertainment industry in films, television, the theatre and other visual story telling devices. Other examples of illustration for entertainment purposes include graphic novels, comic books, animation in film, cartoons, and character boards. This could also include artwork used for t-shirts and other items screen printed for sale.

The most common type of illustration is the 2D illustration. 2D stands for two dimensional, meaning that the images created were dimensionally characterized by height and width only. 2D illustrations can represent just a single sheet of paper with an image on it, just like a regular picture. Such illustrations are usually found in magazines, books and have become very common in websites, where they are used to improve the web page design.

With the advances in the drawing techniques offered by computers, 3D illustrations were created. They are dimensionally characterized not only by height and width, but also by depth. The adding of depth to the illustrations allows for a much more life like representation of the object of the illustration. Today, 3D illustrations are used mainly for technical illustrations. Technical illustrations try to represent technical information in a visual manner. Such illustration images allow for the non technical crowd to have a much better understanding of the written text. This is why such illustrations are often used in school books and guides.

Digital Illustration: Modern 2D and 3D illustrations, just like the regular images, are divided into two types - raster and vector illustrations. While raster illustrations are very common among artists who like to draw with a tablet, vector illustrations are slowly gathering popularity due to their superior quality and scalability. Vector images and illustrations are used mainly in high-scale printing.
