List of Illustration Media and Techniques

  This is a list of typical Media and techniques that are used in illustration including
an explanation of each method or media for use in illustration. These have been organized into the various categories:

Traditional Media

  Acrylic Paint   A type of latex paint made from acrylic resins; also called acrylic latex paint.  
         
  Adhesive   A material capable of fastening two other materials together by means of surface attachment. There are many types, such as spray adhesive, liquid glue, sticky tape, etc.  
         
  Aerosol Paint   Drawing instrument shaped like a pencil that operates as a small pressure gun to apply watercolour pigment in a very fine spray by means of compressed air. Used to correct and obtain tone or graduated tone effect, the instrument gives a very smooth finish to artwork.  
         
Carbon Pencil Made from lampblack (derived from burning oil), delivering a smooth, dark black line. Variations available include blends of carbon, charcoal and graphite.
         
  Chalk Pastel   Drawing medium consisting of fragile, finger-size crayons called pastels, made of powdered pigments combined with a minimum of non greasy binder. They have a chalk texture.  
         
  Charcoal   A black, porous, carbonaceous material, 85 to 98 percent carbon, produced by the destructive distillation of wood and used as a fuel, filter, and absorbent. Comes in willow: a naturally burn thin piece of wood and, compressed charcoal: A harder variety which has been compressed into a stick.  
         
  Clay   A fine-grained, firm earthy material that is plastic when wet and hardens when heated, consisting primarily of hydrated silicates of aluminium and widely used in making bricks, tiles, and pottery.  
         
  Coloured Pencil   A cylindrical case of wood with a combination of pigments or dyes and a binder in the middle, used as a drawing tool.  
         
  Conté   Also known as Conté sticks or Conté crayons. A drawing medium composed of compressed powdered graphite or charcoal mixed with a wax or clay base.  
         
  Crayon   A stick of coloured wax, charcoal, or chalk, used for drawing.  
         
  Enamel Paint   A  paint that air dries to a hard, usually with a glossy, finish.
 
         
  Fabric Paint   A paint that can be used onto fabric, which dries permanently. Some varieties can be ironed on or hair dried.  
         
  Fixative   Solution, generally of alcohol and shellac, that is applied to the surface of artwork used to protect the surface from smudging or being rubbed off.  
         
  Gesso   A mixture of gypsum plaster, glue, and whiting; applied as a base coat for painting.
 
         
  Glass Paint   A transparent paint (with the exception of black and white which are opaque), used to colour glass surfaces. Some varieties stain the glass while others sit on top when dry.  
         
  Glaze   A layer of paint, thinned with a medium, so as to become somewhat transparent.  
         
  Glue   A strong liquid adhesive obtained by boiling collagenous animal parts such as bones, hides, and hooves into hard gelatine and then adding water.  
         
  Gold Leaf   Gold beaten into extremely thin sheets used especially for gilding and decoration.  
         
  Gouache   A method of painting with opaque watercolours mixed with a preparation of gum.  
         
  Graphite   Still sometimes called lead pencil. Comes in hard to soft. 9b the softest, to 9h the hardest.  
         
  Impasto   Thickly applied paint that projects from the picture surface.  
         
  Ink   A pigmented liquid or paste used especially for writing or printing.  
         
  Latex Paint   A paint containing latex in a water suspension combined with pigments and other additives acting as binders.  
         
  Lino   A material that is usually used as a flooring material. Is used in art as a cut-out material with which a print can be made from. Can have several layers for different colours.  
  Linseed Oil   A yellowish oil extracted from the seeds of flax and used as a drying oil in paints and varnishes and in linoleum, printing inks, and synthetic resins.  
         
  Oil Paint   A type of slow-drying paint that consists of particles of pigment suspended in a drying oil, commonly linseed oil.  
         
  Oil Pastel   A painting and drawing medium with characteristics similar to pastels and wax crayons. It consists of pigment mixed with a non-drying oil and wax binder.  
         
  Pen   An instrument for writing or drawing with ink or similar fluid, especially: a ballpoint pen, fountain pen, pen point, etc.  
         
  Plaster   A mixture of lime or gypsum, sand, and water, sometimes with fiber added, that hardens to a smooth solid and is used for coating walls and ceilings.  
         
  Scratchboard   Or scraperboard, is a technique where drawings are created using sharp knives and tools for etching into a thin layer of white China clay that is coated with black India ink.  
         
  Stencil   A sheet, as of plastic or cardboard, in which a desired lettering or design has been cut so that ink or paint applied to the sheet will reproduce the pattern on the surface beneath.  
         
  Tempera   A water based paint made with an egg yoke binder.  
         
  Varnish   A paint containing a solvent and an oxidizing or evaporating binder, used to coat a surface with a hard, glossy, transparent film.  
         
  Watercolour Paint   A colour ground with water and gum where the vehicle of which is water. Moist water colours are kept in a semi fluid or pasty state in little metal tubes or pans.
