Illustration Prices & Rates Guide - Sydney

The hardest part of a job is always giving the client an estimate up front. I've tried to compare some prices I found online, but they seem to be all over the map. Plus, every job is so different and it's hard to predict how many revisions a piece will need.

So to those of you that have made art into your business or are purchasing it, how do you come up with and know the right prices are? How much you charge can vary greatly depending on what the illustration will be used for, how quickly a client wants it, and how much skill/experience an illustrator brings to the table.

The ASA sets recommended minimum rates for writers and illustrators working in the Australian market. These rates recognise the time and effort that go into writing, book illustration and public appearances. Members are encouraged to negotiate fees that are higher than the minimum. Freelance writing, poetry and book illustration

rates cover flat fee payments for first publication only. Another fee should be negotiated if further use of the work is required. The copyright of the work, and ownership of the original artwork in the case of book illustration, remain the property of the creator unless assigned and agreed to in writing. The ASA recommends that a formal Agreement or Contract is signed by all parties before any work is commenced.
The following rates are based on A4 book projects. For 'one off' or single illustrations, add 20 per cent. Rates can be increased depending on detail required, research involved and conceptual input required. The rates are exclusive of GST.

I bid all jobs based on usage (how you'll use the final product) and the level of detail. I do not do spec work, or work on any kind of contingency basis. All work must be paid for in advance. When I take on any illustration job, I always do concept sketches first. This lets you know exactly what you’re getting and is included in the price of

the finished illustration. Any job I bid, I break down into elements. You can do this yourself if you want to know what a job is going to cost. For an animal, figure or car, each would be considered 1 element. Backgrounds and environments are also considered 1 element, but if the background is a crowd scene or a cityscape, the level of detail overall would be less than if you broke the crowd down into elements.

Concept Sketches Only
$165 per element

Finished Illustrations
$565 per element

So, if you wanted a girl spinning records in front of the Eiffel Tower for your New Year’s party in Paris, the bill would look like this:

1. Girl $565
2. Turntables $565
3. Background (Eiffel Tower) $565

Total $1695

Quoting for an illustration job is never easy, and rarely straight forward. A common question that I come across frequently is: "how much does an illustration cost?". Well, unfortunately, it's one of those "how long is a piece of
string?" questions. Every quote for a project is treated individually, and the main factors that affect price are:

  - The detail involved in the art
- The time it will take to produce the art
- Usage of the art: is it for a one off t-shirt or poster, or will it be used as company
  branding?
- Time you would like to buy the art for: Is it 2 years, or indefinitely?
- Copyright is the biggest cost factor. If you want to buy copyright out, this will incur
  a larger cost.

As a general rule, illustrations go from $300 and upwards. In some instances (like bulk work or simple art without revisions) this figure can go down a bit further.
Copyright is automatic to the artist, and needs to be bought out for extra cost.
Branding for companies and products is seen in a different light to one-off illustrations and are generally more expensive, seeing as they are actively promoting and advertising your business or product. If you are based in Australia add GST to the price. International clients are not charged tax.
